Call & Response Exhibit 2024

Throughout the summer of 2024, we sent out a call for responses to photographs from Roger May's Looking at Appalachia - Call & Response project. Taken straight from May's website: "Call and Response is a photo-literary exploration devoted to the relationship between photographs and words. Using photographs from the Looking at Appalachia project, writers are encouraged to respond narratively to a single image in 1,000 words or less. We hope to use this platform to expand our community and encourage collaboration between photographers and writers."

We narrowed down the responses to TEN impressive stories, poems, and ruminations about the Appalachian experience. Those selected to be in the exhibit were recognized at the 2024 ALAS Festival Awards Brunch, where they received $50 in addition to having their work displayed at Stuart's Opera House.  The exhibit can now be explored in digital format below.
